McLean Museum and Art Gallery 15 Kelly Street, Greenock Tel: 01475 715624 Open: Mon-Sat 10am-5pm One of the best small municipal museums in Scotland with displays on local history, James Watt, ship engines and models, natural history and an excellent fine art collection. Regularly changing temporary exhibitions and attractive museum shop. Newark Castle Newark Roundabout, Port Glasgow Tel: 01475 741858 Open April-Sept: Mon-Sun 9.30am-1pm & 1.30pm-6.30pm,. Oct - Nov: Mon - Wed 9.30am - 4.30pm, Thur 9.30am - 12.30pm, Sat 9.30am - 4.30pm, Sun 2pm - 4.30pm Built by George Maxwell in the 15th century, this elegant and virtually intact Castle was enlarged by his descendant Patrick Maxwell in the 16th century. It houses a collection of historic prints of the local area. Watt Library 9 Union Street, Greenock Tel: 01475 715628 Open: Mon & Thurs 2pm-5pm, 6pm-8pm Tue & Fri 10am-1pm, 2pm-5pm Wed & Sat 10am-1pm Within the same complex as the McLean is the Watt Library which houses Inverclyde's archives and local history collection. This is an excellent resource for people researching ship building on the lower Clyde or, for those whose ancestors came from this part of Renfrewshire, tracing their family routes. There is a collection of local papers dating from the first decade of the 19th century, Post Office Directories, Statistical Returns and town plans and old photographs. Also housed within the Watt Library is the Burns Room where Greenock Burns Club, the original Burns appreciation society, keeps its archives.
